knowledge that the word of the cross16 is δύναμις θεοῦ, in other words, how one becomes a σῳζόμενος, “saved.” But faith is not an act of the free will; it is brought about by the word itself. What Paul means can be understood in the light of the predestinarian sense of the two expressions ἀπολλύμενοι, “lost,” and σῳζόμενοι, “saved”:17 the word itself creates the division between the two groups (cf. 2 Cor 4:3–5*).
